Teacher Job Description
Position: Teacher (Part-time-Lisbon Facility)
Type: Treatment
Reports to: Facility Director
- PURPOSE
The purpose of the Teacher position is to provide academic instruction and skill-based training to adult, felony-level offenders sentenced to the Eastern Ohio Correction Center. The Teacher supports participants in developing educational competencies and working toward successful reintegration into the community.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer the TABE test to all offenders upon program entry to determine educational levels.
- Administer the Pre-GED test to participants enrolled in the GED program to assess educational needs.
- Develop individualized educational plans based on assessment results to prepare residents for the GED test.
- Monitor student progress, evaluate performance on a weekly basis, and document updates in case notes.
- Participate in weekly Treatment Team Meetings, reporting on each student’s educational progress and addressing any concerns within the education department.
- Meet periodically with the Facility Director to discuss educational programming and facility-related matters.
- Serve as a representative of the facility by demonstrating compassion, fairness, integrity, and professionalism in all interactions with staff, residents, and the public.
III. OTHER DUTIES
- Administer, score, and interpret educational assessments to determine offender eligibility, placement within the facility’s educational program, or referral to appropriate external educational resources.
- All Educational Department staff, full and part-time, are required to attend, and successfully complete all in-service training sessions identified for “offender care workers”.
- Perform all other duties as requested.
- REQUIREMENTS
The Teacher must meet the following education, experiences, and/or qualifications standards:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Education or a related field.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid teaching certification issued by the State of Ohio.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a teacher.
OR
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid teaching certification issued by the State of Ohio
Special knowledge and abilities:
- Education, training, and/or experience in an amount equal to the minimum qualifications as stated above.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understand principles of learning, specifically with adults and/or those with identified, or unidentified learning difficulties or disabilities.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment and computer-based learning programs.
- Ability to prepare lesson plans, examinations, and other objective measures of student performance.
- Ability to organize and file materials numerically, alphabetically, and/or chronologically.
- Ability to travel, sometimes overnight, and/or work non-traditional hours, including weekends when necessary.
- UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS & HAZARDS
This position requires some physical effort or exertion. The Education Coordinator may spend up to 50% of working hours standing and lecturing, or moving around while helping students. Students are adult, felony-level criminal offenders, and may act out in an inappropriate, and/or violent manner. A risk for physical injury does exist.
